S is for Spiritual.

I don’t have much again this Sunday. I did listen to a talk given by one of my church’s leaders. In his talk entitled: “He Knows You by Name,” Elder Matswagothata says:

“The Savior can and will guide us through every season of life—especially through difficult times.”

If you read the previous post I wrote about being able to do hard things. When I get through difficulties it isn’t just me getting through it. Jesus has walked with me through much of my heartache. I think the most monumental moments of hard were when my mom passed away nearly four years ago and this past year as I grieved the life I thought I would live forever(the end of a 12 year marriage). I cannot make it through anything without heavenly help. I’m most grateful for that kind of support.

S is for Sayings…

“I can do hard things,” has been a saying that resonates with me. Life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies and I often get down and don’t want to be positive or even keep trying to be. Each time I lose hope, I remember all the hard things I have already done and I realize I truly can do anything, including those hard things.

F is for Flowers.

The kids and I planted many packets of wildflowers in one of our garden boxes. We watered religiously and waited and waited. A cat decided that our garden is a great place for a litter box. I have multiple cat defense barriers. The damn cat still digs and poops. Sorry cat lovers. I do not like cats and this hideous feline has solidified my hatred. (Being allergic was the biggest prior factor).

This lonely flower is the sole survivor in our wildflower experiment of 2026. It isn’t much but that flower is hope and believe it or not it still brings me joy everyday when I water.

Do I know what kind of flower it is? Is the kind of flower my favorite this year? You bet!

T is for True Confessions

 True confessions:

I love hamburgers.

I eat ketchup on eggs.

I have students I would not want to meet in a dark alley.

I have students I would do anything for.

I laugh so hard at a few girls in my health class.

I did say: “I can’t learn it for you” in class this week.

I am so glad it is the weekend.

I need to get out of bed.

I am not writing this in Thursday, it is Saturday.

I lie to my kids all the time. Hmmm…Christmas.

I’m a little behind on writing.

I love that the current temp is 66 degrees.

I like baseball more than football.

I like rugby more than football.

I hate that streaming has ruined sports watching.

My new tag line is: the first time I married for love, next time I’m marrying for money.

I really don’t think there will be a next time. Single is easier.

I’m delaying getting a workout in.

I’ll let you know all about the rainy bike ride I’ll take.

I’ll probably forget that promise.

W is for Wanderlust…

Wanderlust: the desire to travel the world.

Oh what I would do for another chance to travel with my mother.

A very memorable roadtrip was to The Apostle Islamds of northern Wisconsin.

It was a girls’ vacation with Sue and Seester Andi. We had a blast. Madeline Island was a highlight. We had to take a ferry to get there.

Lake Superior is a cool destination and being around boats always adds to the vacation. We explored the whole island but were highly impressed with a local outdoors bar.

The atmosphere was amazing as was the food. It was like a little shack. The walls were covered with silly signs. I always love a good pun so I was in heaven.

I love that I have so many sweet memories from times With my mom. She was always up for adventure and made life fun. Miss you mom!

T is for Timeless…

Timeless: things that never go out of style

Dolly Parton’s first album released in 1967. She was 21 years young. Today, she passed on to the diamonds in the sky. I found out in the middle of a class activity in my health class from my students. And I have to say, it took me a few minutes to compose myself to be able to carry on with that activity.

As a five year old, I carried a guitar around my house and I was a singer. I’m sure much of my inspiration came from Dolly. I don’t remember specifics of Dolly but I do know she has been in the fabric of my background forever. There isn’t a time on this planet that Dolly wasn’t a part of. I’m sure you also have memories with Dolly.

She wasn’t only an inspiration to girls with guitars, her reach was huge. She campaigned for good in this world. She was kind and generous and also had some spice. She is what we needed, what music needed and what the world needed.

I think that genuine voice and creative talent seemed to be something that would last forever. As I scrolled through social media, there were many people who said they just weren’t okay because they didn’t ever think she could ever die. Her nephew had the daunting task to announce her death and even he mentioned how for years he put the idea behind him as if it would never happen. Today, we lost a special one; may Dolly continue to shine for us to feel.

Dolly Parton is truly a timeless icon and I’m so glad I got to live in a world with her in it.

M is for Mania

“Mania: excessive or unreasonable enthusiasm; the object of such enthusiasm."

I got into teaching because I had some passion. I was passionate about helping kids learn that they were capable. I also was passionate about sports and writing. In what world besides sports writing could I combine those? I started out teaching English and physical education. What a combo. Turns out it wasn’t “marketable” to keep my position because it would be hard to fill. Funny…it hasn’t been open in 25 years. But I am thankful I got a certification to teach health as well. Anyway, as I taught my current students to throw frisbees at each other this week, I was reminded of just how much gratitude I have to be able to bring energy and passion to something as simple as sport skills.

Sports truly give me so much joy and how blessed I am to be able to call what I do “work.”

S is for Spiritual…

I haven’t always been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints(sometimes referred to as “Mormons”)

I grew up Catholic and in high school met a really cool family. Their house was a place of calm and welcoming. The day my brother got married the first time, I was to sleep on the couch(my bed was given away to family) and that family invited me to stay at their house as long as I went to church with them in the morning. I didn’t know anything about “the Mormons” and I always liked to see what people believed. Well…long story short…I went to church that Sunday and went regularly to that church since then back in 1995.

Here is a scripture that a missionary shared with me as I was learning about the church and wondering if it was true, Doctrine and Covenants 9:8-9:

“8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.

9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.”

Just two verses change the trajectory of my life.

“You’ll miss this someday”

Parenthood is a crazy ride. One day they are tiny and need you for everything, then one day you can’t even pick them up because they are so big. W

She was a bit scared tonight. I said she can sleep with me if she needed to even though I cannot sleep well when she does.

The I’m glad I’m her safe place and that I get to mother her. I’m sad it goes way too fast. I will miss this someday!

W is for…Wanderlust

Wanderlust: the desire to travel the world

I hope to travel again. Time and money, mainly the later, keep me from whimsically wandering the globe. Oh yeah…And that whole job thing!

Back in the day I had an amazing trip with an amazing friend. After I finished in London with my aunt, uncle and mom and sent them back to the states, I traveled north to Scotland where my friend, Mary Beth was living at the time. My favorite quote from the trip was when we went out and MB had to drive, she would chant:”we drive on the left here!”

Oh the castles and cool things we saw!

I’m so glad to have had the opportunity to go across the pond. I hope to one day again get to see some pretty places.

T is for timeless…

School starts tomorrow. School is timeless, as is the one room schoolhouse. This one was in Little Suamico, Wisconsin. I think my dad went to school here as well as his siblings. School had changed in many ways since way back in the day…but alas…school is school. I guess we will see how this year will go. Year 25 as a teacher for me. Weird.

M is for Mania…

"Mania: excessive or unreasonable enthusiasm; the object of such enthusiasm."

Pens. They either matter to you or they don’t. For the writer in me, pens have always been important. I have had a few favorites along my writing journey.

My first preferred pen were the Pilot G2 Gel Pens. They went on smooth and had a thin line. The second were Korean pens. Not only did they have cool mistranslations on them, but they also were the thinnest pen you could buy. Even smaller than .3mm

Then came fountain pens with the ink inside. Again a great line and thickness but I was lead to the perfect pen for me:

Enter the Pilot Frixon Eraseable Gel Pen. These are my current mania pen. I bought myself that very pack as a back to school constellation present. Retail therapy truly is a thing. These pens make me happy. If you know, you know!

What’s your favorite pen?

Currently, Dallen H. Oaks is Thr Prophet. Here is a quote from him:

I find hope within my faith  That hope comes from Jesus Christ.  We need Him now more than ever.  May we all find hope and light in this often dark and chaotic world! Happy Sunday!

“What cha gonna do? -Karen Zumann

I have a very wise woman in my life named Karen. She is in her early 80s and I truly want to be like her when I grow up.

Karen is the mom of one of my dear friends, Marla. Marla and I met when we were in middle school. Marla remembers everything including the goofy stuff I said in class back then, and she is still one of my besties!

Karen recently said to Marla when asked how she was doing even with some challenges and Karen responded with our now very quoted inspiration: “what cha gonna do?”

Life hands us lemons sometimes. It can be brutal and sour but realizing that a lot of the hard stuff is out of our control can really free us from unneeded worry. Sometimes we just need to  let  go and  add the sugar of positivity to the mix. I also suggest making time to do what you love…cleansing and diluting water so to speak for the lemons of life.

So…make lemonade and realize…

“What cha gonna do?”

F is for Flowers…

This little beauty is a late add to my flower collection:

I was checking out the Home Depot outdoor flowers one day hoping for clearance flowers(sad to think the season is almost over) and saw this without flowers, only buds. Price tag: $5.

I cannot say no to a deal. Glad I didn’t. In bloom ever since, this little pot brightens each day as I pass it on my porch!

T is for True Comfessions

Here’s my list of true confessions for today:

1. I fixed the bathroom sink drain that wouldn’t open today. It was very satisfying but deep inside I also hate that I have to fix everything that goes wrong in the house now.

2. I drink too much zero soda. And eat too much pizza pretzels from Sam’s Club. Be careful they are so good and so habit forming.

3.My planner for this school year has quotes only by Christina Koch because she’s my emotional support astronaut and the whole idea makes me happy.

4. Weddings are a mix of emotion for a recently divorced person.  I’m happy for people but also feel very broken because I have no desire to be married and really hope they can make it but only because I project all the crazy of my marriage onto them

5. I really like dogs. I see dogs and I have to talk about them as I admire them. I actually prefer dogs to some humans. They don’t talk back and most of them are pretty dang positive. The dogs, not the people.

Humor me. Share confessions in the comments.

W is for Wanderlust…

Wanderlust: the desire to travel the world.

Our trip to Disneyland was magical. It was the last family trip before the divorce and I am so glad we went. I am also glad R wanted to invite my Disney-loving sister!

We only spent one day in the park and although we could have filled more days, we packed a whole lot into that one day. I’m not much of a ride person but I even enjoyed Rise of the Resistance. My favorites rides were It’s a Small World and Haunted Mansion. Somebody was very sad it wasn’t the OG version…that person was definitely not me.

I’d have to say The Nightmare Before Christmas is

my favorite Disney theme. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I am so glad they had just changed to this theme just days before we were there in July 2024.

I feel I may have more Disney adventures in my future. I would love to go see all of the park in Halloween decor. It would also be really cool to one day be in Halloween and the next Christmas.  Maybe in retirement with my sister!

T is for Timeless…

(T is also for tired. My first day back at work...)

Schwinn is a bicycle company that started out in Chicago in 1895. That alone is enough to say this brand is timeless.  You can still buy Schwinn bikes today but they are not even close to the quality and craftsmanship from the company’s origin!

I have owned three classic Schwinns now. Two I restored about six years ago and the one you see in the picture above. I sold the twin Schwinns a couple of years back just because they were not the most comfortable rides.

This burgundy one though is a sweet ride. This was also a sweet deal because jt was gifted to me by a neighbor and I only had to do a little chrome rubbing to restore shine making it good as new. I love the shocks on the original seat that makes it so smooth to ride.

These old bikes truly are timeless. I secretly hope to have one from the 1930s or 1940s that is similar to this one my grandma rode as a teen:

This photo: also timeless. Man, I miss my sweet grandma but I also am glad I was able to have her in my life for so long. A true blessing!

M is for Mania

"Mania: excessive or unreasonable enthusiasm; the object of such enthusiasm."

                                                Merriam-Webster

I think my kids bring me lots and lots of enthusiasm.  They truly are objects of excessive enthusiasm and they keep me on my toes and striving to be continually improving.

Yesterday, one of them turned 13.  I am now the mother of a teen.  I actually like teens.  I work with them in my career and of all ages of kids, teens are more my jam than any other age.

I cannot believe how grown this boy has become.  Oh sweet E, how I love thee. It was so cool to see him bake is own birthday cake and plan is own party.  He also had a friend gathering and paid for them all to eat pizza!

He is now taller than me.  He likes to run and is on a cross country club.  He loves playing Minecraft and Fortnite.  He is a goofy middle schooler and when he is around his three besties, he is a hoot.  He loves being a big kid and loves Native body products.  I have no need to worry about a smelly teen, because this kid is obsessed with being clean! He still loves to go on bike rides with me.  He is a great artist and violinist.  He loves his family, even if he picks fights with his younger sister daily.  He does well in school and is overall a great kid.  I have been so blessed with amazing children

E definitely is a mania maker!

S is for Spiritual

I’m tired and just writing this at 11:45. We had to celebrate E today…he is the big 13!

I will just share with you my favorite quote from my lesson in Relief Society today, this is from Elder Causse’s talk from April 2026 General Conference:

“ Years ago, while spending peaceful time in the beautiful ?countryside, I stepped outside after sunset to rest on a lounge chair. The night was so dark that I could hardly see anything. Instinctively, I looked up and noticed a tiny flickering point of light, then another. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, the sky filled with stars.

I thought, “This is like our relationship with God.” Some think He is distant, and life feels heavy as a result. But if they pause to reflect on His presence in their lives, they will find that He is near—quietly present, far closer than they imagine.”

Try to have a bit of a pause today to remember God is present in your life.

S is for Sayings...

There are so many sayings, slogans, and mottos in the English language.  What are some of your favorites?

One that I have taken to heart lately is "Better out than in." A very wise friend has echoed this a few times in the past year when I needed to cry it out.  When I was young, I thought that crying made you weak.  Not so my friends, in fact, the chemicals in tears actually are for healing.  It is science, look it up! (and if you have never seen Kickball Dad on social media, stop what you are doing and go watch a few of his videos.  He is hilarious and says:  "look it up!" a lot.

Yesterday, I was reminded of this as I was tearing up on the way to swimming with some friends.  I had just heard that two of my dear uncles had passed away.  Yes, two in one day.  I loved them both and had just spent some time with them on our trip to  Wisconsin.  Oh how the impromptu dinner with Uncle Dan is cherished, and I am so glad we were able to enjoy one last A&W root beer float with Uncle John.

Ellis looked over at me in the car and said "Oh Mom!" in the kindest sweetest voice.  How wonderful it is to have children who get me and support me and cry with me.  Tears are one of many things that are better out than in, but I will save any other bodily functions for some other blogger.

F is for Flowers

I admitted the other day that I am now that lady…the garden lady. I guess you just become the age when growing things besides children is rewarding. I full accept this label. I do refuse to put the word old in front of the title though. I am not the old garden lady.

Flowers make me happy. So, Fridays are for flower highlights.

Today’s flower is sunflower. I have allowed the sunflowers to reign over my front yard. Some people may think they are weeds, but they are sunshine to my soul and I have allowed them to plant themselves at will this year. The bright golden blossoms make me smile whenever I am coming or going from home.

What is your favorite flower?

T is for True Confessions!

Sometimes our souls just need to get things out that we have been holding secret.  True confessions are just what they sound like...you confess something true about yourself.

Here are five of my true confessions:

1. I hate onions.  They are gross.  Recently, I have heard they are great for gut health, but guess what...I still don't want to eat them.  Crunchy...yuck, cooked and slimy...bigger yuck.  Fried in the shape of a ring...tempting.

2. I sometimes swear.  I wish I could say I only use one or two of the mild ones.  I think my over-exposure to teen swearing in my job has ruined me.  I only swore about 5 times today.  I am working on it.

3.  I may have a hat collecting problem.  I have thirty hooks holding hats in my room.  Those hooks don't even hold all my hats, just the ones I wear most often.

4. I am a burper.  I try to be dainty about it in public, but when just around family(or friends I am comfortable with)...BURP!

5. I leave piles of dishes in the sink until they actually begin to bug me.  The bugging usually doesn't come until we are out of forks or plates.

So...your turn...what are three of your true confessions?  (Notice I am nice and let you off the hook with only three!)

W is for Wanderlust

Wanderlust: the desire to travel the world.

Where in the world do you want to go?

I have been to a few places outside of the United States, and I loved it. If I had the budget for it, I would love to see more of Europe, especially Italy and the Nordic countries. I have seen bits of Russia, England and Scotland.

My itch to travel was sparked by my mother. She had the opportunity to travel a bit for work and I was able to tag along. My first trip was to Los Angeles followed by a trip to Ft. Lauderdale. The two things I remember from those trips were The Dodger game with my cousin mentioned in an earlier post and a Bart Simpson outfit bought in Florida.

Another one of my mom’s work trips brought us to Phoenix. My sister joined us and we still talk about that trip. The memories with my mom are cherished now that she has been gone for nearly four years. The trip to Arizona I was in the middle of  summer, so naturally it was hot. When out for adventures, my mom would always have something to say about how hot it was. Apparently, I got a bit cheeky about hearing her complaints and told my sister that I was going to move to Phoenix when I was done with college. Andi and I were talking about that trip a few weeks ago when I was visiting Wisconsin. What great memories were made with my mom. I am very grateful for each trip with her and for the spark she ignited in me to travel more.

I have shared this love of travel with my own children as well. We recently went to Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument. The views are breathtaking and we enjoyed our little adventure together

Ellis has his very own national park passport and he started collecting stamps when we were in San Francisco a few years ago. I love seeing his excitement for each new stamp and each new adventure. He actually bought his own passport stickers this time. It’s fun to see what he values. I like to think I ignited his wanderlust by making the roadtrip to Wisconsin each summer an experience filled with exciting stops. He still loves Mt. Rushmore and has made me promise we will road trip to a Wisconsin again before he graduates high school. He also has great apparitions to visit Japan

Zarah is always up for adventure too. She may not ever know truly where we are but she always enjoys adventure and spending time with her family! She hopes to one day visit Australia. 🇦🇺 I have no clue where that desire comes from but I’m going to blame the cartoon Bluey for now.

Be sure to share where you would like to visit.  I would love to hear all about your travel bucket list!

T is for Timeless

Timeless: things that never go out of style

Some things never go out of style.  I love walking through antique shops and thrift stores.  There just is something about old objects that is fun to check out.  Lately, since I bought myself an old record/tape player, I have this new passion about old music.

I am a child of the 80s and 90s and that is where a lot of my favorite music lives.  Sometimes my kids love listening to my old favorites; other times they make farting noises until I change the song.  You win some, you lose some.  One particular artist that they have come to love is Michael Jackson.  They both saw the recent movie about Michael and loved it.  They were not the only ones.  If you have not yet seen Michael, what are you doing with your life?  Get out and find it to stream today.  I watched it twice in the theater and would go more times if allowed.  It is so good.  Michael's nephew, Jaafar Jackson, does an amazing job playing his uncle.  He moves and sounds just like Jackson.

Now, since the movie came out I thought it would be cool to have a physical copy of one of Michael's albums.  During the 80s and 90s, I was buying cassette tapes.  With my new player, I can again enjoy tapes.  I looked about a month ago at one of my favorite record stores for Thriller and found a copy that was priced at 15 dollars.  I have this deal with myself that I won't spend more than ten dollars on any album, so I walked away, even though I was sad about it.

Things happen for a reason, and while in Wisconsin a few weeks ago with my sister, Andi, we did one of my favorite things: thrifting.  We went to one of my favorite places near my Dad's house called: St. Vincent's De Paul. I looked for clothes with no luck, found a cool pair of black Converse All-Stars for 8 bucks, and was ready to hit the checkout, but then noticed the media section.  There were countless CDs, and a few tapes.  And then...there it was staring back at me: Thriller by Michael Jackson. NO WAY! I was sure it would be priced up from their usual 1.75 price, so I was shocked to see it wasn't when I flipped it to the back and saw the price sticker.  Heaven.  I was in heaven and so glad I didn't pay 15 for it.

There is nothing like the nostalgia old tapes and vinyl records give me and as I have listened to this tape a few times, I am back in my moon-walking days.  Sometimes it pays to walk away and stick to your guns!

M is for Mania

"Mania: excessive or unreasonable enthusiasm; the object of such enthusiasm."

                                                Merriam-Webster

What things bring you mania? Mania producing power for me is usually sports related, but to be different and make the creative juices come out, this will be the only time I write a sports themed mania.

I thought I would write a really long post about Ilona Maher and how rugby just makes me happy, but I have already wrote that HERE. Maher has recently hinted that she is back practicing in San Diego where the USA Eagles have their practice facility.  This truly makes me have Ilona Mania, but I am sure you will hear more about that over on socials as I pine about going and seeing her play this next season and in 2027-28 as she prepares and competes with her team in the Olympics in Los Angeles.

The other sport mania that hits me every March-October is baseball season.  I follow two teams, which is contentious at times.

“Logo courtesy of the Los Angeles Dodgers / MLB.”

People with either LOVE, or they will HATE The Los Angeles Dodgers.  I have a friend who is my ultimate baseball friend. I love how I can talk to her about baseball and she knows her stuff.  We can talk until it turns to talking about LA.  She is a Diamondback fan and Dodger hater.  She is a good friend though because she let me watch a Dodger vs Brewers game in spring training when we went. That is true friendship there!

I went to my first ever professional baseball game when I was twelve.  My older "Californian" cousin took me and it was magical. He later saw me with a Dodger hat on and asked "Wait, you are a Dodger fan?" That game obviously didn't stand out to him like it did me, he was just taking his little cousin to a one game while she was in town with her mother while said mother was on a work trip.  He has been to a lot of games so I forgive him, and I also thank him for making me the fan I was.  The energy of Dodger Stadium and the fan base there is one of a kind.  And don't get me started on Dodger Dogs!

In the era of Orel Hershiser and Mark Gibson and their 1988 World Series win, how could I not become a fan?

I also love my true home team:

Logo courtesy of Major League Baseball / Milwaukee Brewers.

My family didn't follow The Brewers as I grew up in Wisconsin.  We did occasionally get to a local summer collegiate game here and there, and I played softball, but we never concentrated on the Brewers.  Now, that could be because the Brewers have never, ever won a World Series.  It seems like if teams have a history of being better, they have a bigger fan base.  With the Brewers, we just keep a hoping. They did appear in the 1982 Series, but lost to the Cardinals.  Maybe this is why to this day I hate the Cardinals! In the past five years, they gave made the post season twice and they do really have a lot of talent lately, so the excitement is there but they often choke when it counts. Currently, they have the best record in Major League Baseball, but that could have changed before you read this!

It is hard being a fan of two teams.  Who do you cheer for when they play each other? My friends from home were glad a few seasons ago when I told them I would be cheering for the Brewers against the Dodgers in post season play, but then they were disappointed to see I was cheering for the Dodgers after the Brewers choked.  It is a rough life, but somebody has to be this kid.
Here is a baseball mania haiku for you:

Baseball mania:
What team do I cheer for now?
Depends on the day!

I'd love to hear what things bring you mania.  Comment here or on the socials...

S is for Spiritual.

Spiritual has to do with the soul. According to Google, it is "a connection to something greater than oneself." People have different ways of being spiritual. Sometimes, we will feel spiritual in nature or anywhere we feel calm. To some that is in a religious place, for others, it doesn't necessarily need to be in a designated place.

I feel most spiritual when I slow down. My "greater than oneself" is my Creator, or my Heavenly Father. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I worship each Sunday in a church. I am fortunate enough to live across the street from my church building(this doesn't guarantee that I am on time weekly, though). I also worship in a temple. And I try to do so at least once a month. Within the walls of the temple, I feel calm and able to take a pause from the daily stresses of life. Those building are special places of worship for me, and I don't have any "alone time"in those buildings, even though they are favorite places. I often feel spiritual outside of religious buildings. I feel close to God as I pray to Him alone in personal private prayer. I also feel close to God when I am out in nature. The woods is one of my favorite places, whether on a UTV in Wisconsin on my Uncle's land or up in the mountains on a hike or bike ride. Often, the feeling of peace comes as I listen to Gospel music, or read the words in scripture or the words of my church leaders.

Spirituality is a big part of who I am. My faith in God has always been a beacon in my life. Jesus Christ is the center of my faith and I am learning how to know Him and am slowly trying to be more like Him.

I have a job, or calling, in my church congregation(ward) teaching in our women's group or class(Relief Society). Every other week we study together talks that were shared in our past General Conference. In General Conference, church leadership, including our prophet, apostles, and other leaders speak. Conference Weekend is the first weekends of April and October. In our classes at church, we are currently looking at the talks given in April of this year.

For today's spiritual thought, I thought I would share something from one of my lessons. Back in May, I taught a lesson from the talk entitled "The Character of Christ" given by D. Todd Christofferson, who currently is a counselor in The First Presidency of the church. You can read or watch this talk HERE.

Something that really got me from the talk is the question posed by Peter in The New Testament of the Bible: "What matter of persons ought ye to be?" found in 2 Peter 3:11. When pondering what the answer to that question is, I realized that the answer may seem to be a pretty big responsibility. The answer is to be like Christ and to fill those sandals, it would take a lot. In fact, I think I would fall very short!

The list of Christ's attributes that as Christians we should be striving to possess is very long. He was perfect, after all. I don't know about you, but perfect isn't a word I would ever use to describe myself.

I think the most daunting part of becoming like Jesus is that I often feel like I need to be doing it all, right now. Humans want to get stuff done RIGHT NOW.

The talk later goes on to say what the most important thing I needed to hear about becoming more like Christ:

"Yes, it requires a consistent and sustained effort on our part, but remember, it is not simply a matter of our striving. The good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is that we, each of us, can call on the grace of Jesus Christ to help us. With our baptism and confirmation, He promises us the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the messenger of His grace."

The beauty of being a follower of Christ is that He is there to help us become like Him. He also took upon himself all of our imperfections so that we can turn to Him for help to improve. This life is all about "striving" and learning. We won't be perfect throughout the journey but if we rely on His merits, we cannot fail.

This life is all about the journey and I was comforted by this sentence: "For most of us, our mighty change of heart occurs incrementally over time." We are supposed to be changing and becoming better people as we experience and live life. I love that we truly do not have to be perfect right now, we just need to be trying. Big change comes in little movements through time.

If you find yourself struggling with not being where you want to be spiritually, remember you are learning and growing. Don't be too hard on yourself as you strive to be better. We can all get there as we lean on our faith.

Have a wonderful day and thanks for coming to my mini relief society lesson.

S is for Starting...

What is something you want to start?

I am thinking of this really ambitious thing to start. It is on this very page, existing in cyberspace, an electric spot where I create—where I toy with words.

I think of questions about this: why would I start something so ambitious at the end of summer? Why would a teacher do something so silly? Insane? Ambition is an interesting paradox.

I just Marco Poloed a friend... is that even a real verb? Anyway, I spoke of feeling a bit directionless, a little unambitious, and how I had thought about starting a "post a day" challenge for myself.

I actually started thinking about this two weeks ago, and poof—August is tomorrow (hello from the past, by the way!).

So, here is the ambition... I will get to it... look, a squirrel! Focus Alice!  I want to post here everyday in August.  Each day will have a theme. This isn't something too new, I have done that in the past but I decided to make the words start with the same letter of the day of the week.  Today is Saturday...I don't have a word yet for Saturdays...but for today it is start!  Anyway, each day will be a cool word I found by googling "Cool words begining with" and then the letter of the days of the week, so creative, right? I bet you are now wondering what will be the words, this is so exciting...

Well...you will have to wait until I announce them, but you also are a part of it because you should now start listing cool words that begin with 's', because I will pick a word from the list for Saturday's theme. You can either comment here on this post, or suggest by commenting on my social posts.  So, good luck...may you find some really cool words.

Here is a Haiku about starting:

Baby Steps

So where should I START?

Starting: often the hardest

buh buh baby steps.

Truly, sometimes starting is the hardest part of anything...and here I did it.  Come back tomorrow for more random expressions!

Cheers!
